About Michigan

The American state of Michigan is situated in the Great Lakes Region of the country. It’s made up of two peninsulas and borders Canada to the south, which is separated by the Detroit River. It has one of the longest freshwater shorelines in the world as it features Lake St. Clair, as well as the Great Lakes of Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Superior. It also has about 65,000 inland ponds and lakes and has the most lighthouses in America. It became the 26th state to join the Union back in 1837.

Michigan’s the eight largest state in terms of population with just over 10 million residents and is the 11th largest when it comes to size. The capital is Lansing and the largest city is Detroit. Other major centers include Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Warren, Pontiac, Battle Creek, Port Huron, Muskegon, Sault Ste. Marie, and Flint. Michigan is well known as the Motor City because of its automobile production plants as well as the birth place of Motown music.

The region was first settled by Native Americans thousands of years ago and the Europeans started joining them in 1668. The region saw some famous historical battles before the US won control of it in the 1800s.

You can get to Michigan by road if you’re coming from Canada or America. There are nine border crossings with Canada, which include ferries, tunnels, railway, and bridges. The road system’s excellent, but if you’d rather fly in, Detroit has an international airport. Amtrak rail service also stops in Detroit and a few other locations.

Because of its location between the Great Lakes and its landscape of mountains, rivers, streams, lakes, forests, marshes, bays, and islands, Michigan is one of the best states in the country when it comes to the great outdoors as it offers excellent camping, fishing, boating, hunting, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking, etc.

Some of the best outdoor places to hit include Isle Royale National Park, Keweenaw National Historical Park, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Manistee National Forest, Huron National forest, Hiawatha National Forest, Father Marquette National Memorial, Ottawa National Forest, and the North Country National Scenic Trail.

In fact, there’s an endless supply of them as Michigan has 19 state recreation areas, six state forests, and 78 state parks, which is the largest state forest and park system in America. Others include Mackinac Island State Park, Holland State Park, Mackinaw State Forest, and Au Sable State Forest. Spending a lot of time outdoors is common in Michigan and the weather usually cooperates as it features the basics, which are hot summers and cold winters.

Another wonderful place to visit is Mackinac Island as it’s a beautiful little place that has banned most motorized vehicles, which makes it a great place to explore and relax on. If you want to see some fine historic sites, then Lansing’s a good place to start as it features quite a few of them, including the Capitol Building.

Some of the state’s most popular events include the National Cherry Festival and the Tulip Time Festival. Detroit is where most of the action is and it has quite a bit to keep people busy as it offers sites the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Zoo, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Arab American National Museum. The city also has four casinos for those who like to roll the dice.

Sports fans will also have a field day in Detroit as there are several major league professional sports teams located there. These include hockey’s Red Wings (NHL), baseball’s Tigers (MLB), basketball’s Pistons (NBA), and football’s Lions (NFL). There are also quite a few minor-league pro teams as well as collegiate athletics.

Finding a decent place to stay in Michigan is no problem at all as it has all types of accommodations in all price ranges. Restaurants are the same, and you’ll find all types of foods available, including international dishes.

Michigan offers everything you could want if you’re a nature lover and/or fond of the big city life. The scenery is superb and the activities are endless.
